Mera Peak Climbing
Mera peak is considered as one of the major and popular trekking peaks in Nepal. The Peak itself rises to the south of Everest with the ascent, technically straightforward; however, the heavy snow and the maze of crevasses make the way a bit longer to the summit. To reach the Base Camp there are several different routes beside the conventional one which is easy. The routes crossing Amphu Labtsa (5,780m) and the Mingbo La (5,871m) provide some of the most adventurous trekking experience with spectacular sceneries through remote valleys and passes filled with glaciers.
North Face Glacier from "Mera La" : The base camp is set up at 5,300 meter near Mera La on the Hongu side in the moraine below the ice. From here a high camp is set at 5,800 meters near a rocky outcrop on the Mera Glaciers. There are three main summits which are in reach of a climber without much difficulty. The south summit (6,065m) is the most accessible with the Northern Summit (6,476m), the highest, which can be reached by skirting the Central Summit (6,461m) to the north and following snow ridge to its top. Climbing the middle summit requires ascent up on steep snow and is more technical. Mera North is straight-forward climb.
The typical eastern Himalayan climbing seasons apply: April-May before the monsoon, or October-November after it, more or less. However, some outfitters are seen booking this trip during the Christmas holiday season, but it may not be advisable as it could be excessively cold and dark then!
